Rhodiola Rosea
Small SHR-5 extract trials found less mental fatigue: a 2003 RCT in 161 military cadets after a single dose, a 2000 crossover trial in 56 physicians on night duty over two weeks (Darbinyan et al.), and a 2000 pilot in students during exams. The Swedish burnout RCT (Olsson et al., 2008, n=60, 576mg/day) ran 28 days — not 12 weeks — and improved burnout and attention scores versus placebo, while depression scores improved equally in both groups. A 2012 systematic review of 11 trials rated every included study at high or unclear risk of bias and called the evidence contradictory.

Mecanismo de acción
Rhodiola is an adaptogen that modulates the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis, reducing cortisol output under stress. Its key bioactives (rosavins and salidroside) inhibit monoamine oxidase enzymes, increasing availability of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine — neurotransmitters involved in motivation, mood, and cognitive stamina.

Beneficios documentados
- Mental fatigue reduction (small, low-quality trials)
- Burnout and attention scores in stress-related fatigue (one 28-day RCT)
Efectos secundarios y precauciones
- Generally safe; no side effects were reported in the night-duty physician trial
- Mild activation/restlessness initially
- MAO inhibitors and antidepressants: theoretical interaction based on laboratory MAO inhibition, no clinical reports found — ask your doctor before combining
- Avoid late evening dosing

Recomendaciones de combinación
Ingredientes que se combinan bien con Rhodiola Rosea y por qué.
The classic adaptogen stack. Rhodiola is activating (raises norepinephrine, best morning); Ashwagandha is calming (lowers cortisol, best evening). Together they provide full-day HPA axis support without one cancelling the other out.
Rhodiola's activating effect pairs well with L-Theanine's calming effect. Use Rhodiola for cognitive stamina; L-Theanine to soften any agitation or restlessness Rhodiola can cause initially.
Both target performance under stress via different mechanisms. Rhodiola modulates cortisol/monoamine levels; Tyrosine replenishes catecholamine substrate. Strong combination for high-demand cognitive days or night shifts.
Preguntas frecuentes
Does Rhodiola need to be cycled?
Not on current evidence. The clinical trials ran from a single dose up to 4 weeks, so they neither tested cycling nor months of continuous use. Some people take a 1–2 week break every 4–6 weeks as a precaution against a possible "ceiling effect".
What do rosavins and salidroside mean on a Rhodiola label?
Rosavins and salidroside are Rhodiola's key bioactives. Rhodiola rosea naturally contains rosavins and salidrosides in about a 3:1 ratio, and preparations are made to reflect it (Ishaque 2012). The trials we cite used the SHR-5 extract, and their abstracts state no marker percentages.
Can Rhodiola cause anxiety or jitteriness?
In a minority of people, especially at doses above 400mg, Rhodiola can cause a stimulant-like restlessness or mild anxiety — particularly in the first week. Start at 200mg and increase gradually. Some people pair it with L-Theanine to soften this, though that combination has not been tested in a trial.
Is Rhodiola safe to take with antidepressants?
Not without medical supervision. Rhodiola compounds inhibit monoamine oxidase in laboratory studies, so an interaction with SSRIs, MAOIs and other antidepressants (including serotonin syndrome) is theoretically possible — no clinical reports were found in our 2026 PubMed review. Always consult your doctor if you are on any psychiatric medication.
